Exploring Alice's Hot-Mess Tour Through Wonderland & Neo's Epic Quest for Enlightenment: A Modern Awakening Parallel
In A World of Our Own, Perception is Reality. đ
âIf I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isnât; And contrary wise what it is it wouldnât be and what it wouldnât be it would.â
- Alice in Wonderland
Letâs be real, Alice was a privileged and neurotic fucking mess. In todayâs world sheâd be an influencer for sure, making âget ready with me videosâ (GRWM) on TikTok about how sheâs always late, or how she overdid it on shrooms with a group of gypsies, led by a burning man archetype named the Mad Hatter; her recent obsession with Cheshire cats, and how sheâs been in her, âwhy canât roses be painted red â empowerment, era.â Jokes aside, what I love about this psychedelic-infused storytelling is how it highlights the dream state and illusory nature of reality. In Wonderland, perception is not a passive reception of an objective truth, but rather an active creationâa "brain-based best guess", at deciphering a non-ordinary world. We see this same premise referenced with Neoâs character in The Matrix; who is Initially trapped in a life that feels incongruent with his inner sense of purpose only later to awaken to the harsh truth of a world enslaved by machines. Much like Neo, and Alice, we find ourselves in a state of collective amnesia, yearning for something beyond the mundaneâ whether its a wild adventure or facing our own internal Agents, eventually we will be confronted with the question of âwho we areâ and how deep the rabbit hole within ourselves, actually goes.Â
